An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge also titled as A dead Man’s dream is an anthologized short story set during American Civil War written by Ambrose Bierce, an American writer remembered as searing critic. His unique style of writing was based on the theme of war that describes impossible events.
Peyton Farquhar, a Confederate sympathizer lives in south with his wife and children. During an ill fate day a gray-clad soldier visits his house and informs him that Union soldiers are repairing the railroads including the nearby Owl Creek Bridge. Without knowing he has been trapped by the soldier, he goes to Owl Creek Bridge and while standing on the bridge he has been arrested by the army on account of his attempted crime to explode the bridge and sentenced to be hanged to death at the bridge.
Peyton Farquhar now about to be hanged thinks of his family and thinking of escaping by diving into the river. But in a moment he is hanged and unexpectedly the rope breaks, he falls into water with rope tying his neck. He swims deeply and moves to a forest area and realizing, he has to walk 30 miles to reach his home. He starts walking and felt suddenly he wakes up from sleep and he could see his wife standing in her house. He runs towards her, but suddenly feels a pain in his neck and everything is dark now.
He is dead now, in reality he could not escape and only he dreamt of escaping during the time between tying the rope over his neck and falling into the river dead.
