Dewey decimal classification is a proprietary library classification method developed by Melville Louis Kossuth Dewey, an American librarian and educator and the inventor of this system.
Prior to invention of DDC, libraries had been assigning permanent bookshelves based on their acquisition rather than topic or genre. DDC created the concept of providing bookshelf based on the relative location and relative index. Main classes are assigned with Arabic numeral of three digits and can be expanded through fractional decimals. This system phenomenally changed the way library operates, and DDC being followed in more than 135 countries comprising 200000 libraries.
