Synopsis

Famous Modern Ghost Stories is a selective collection of popular ghost stories written by various authors and collected by Emily Dorothy Scarborough, an American writer of folk culture and ghost stories. Her notable writings include Fugitive Verses, The Wind, Impatient Griselda, The Story of Cotton, and On the Trail of Negro Folksongs.

Dorothy mentions in the introduction that human nature always inclined towards supernatural and superstition powers which makes the ghosts imperishable and inevitable subject for the literary world.  She also specifies that the modern ghosts are more complex than their peers of decades back. This collection has more than 25 ghost stories, notable among include The beast with five fingers, The shadows on the wall, What was it, The middle toe of the right foot, At the gate, and The haunted orchard.
