Oedipus at Colonus written by Sophocles is the second play of The Oedipus Trilogy which portrays the tragic hero Oedipus’s exit from Thebes till his death at Athens.
Oedipus was expelled from the kingdom by his sons Eteocles and Polynices, and travel to Athens accompanied by his daughters Antigone and Ismene to die in the holy land. On reaching Athens, he faces resistance from the villagers, however after revealing his identity, Theseus the king of Athens makes him the citizen of his Kingdom and request him to stay in his city till his death.
Meanwhile Eteocles and Polynices in an attempt to gain the Thebes fight each other and asking support of his father. However Oedipus recalls their treatment towards him and says both will fight and die killing each other.The drama ends in a note of the death of Oedipus and buried in the Athens, so that the kingdom will be harmless forever.
