Synopsis

The Tragedy of Othello is tragedy written by William Shakespeare based on the inspiration from an Italian short story of Cinthio, A Moorish Captain. Othello is performed only in professional theaters due its vulnerabilities of its themes of racism, love, jealousy, and betrayal.

This play narrates the vulnerabilities of human minds makes their life and their beloved ones to miserable. Othello, a Moorish general is married to Desdemona, daughter of Brabantio, a Venetian senator. Prior to their marriage, Roderigo loved her and is annoyed now with her marriage and still longing for her. Iago, Othello’s ensign is frustrated on Othello’s promotions of Cassio above Iago, as he believes he is not a battle-tested soldier like him. Also his baseless belief on the affairs of his wife Emilia with Othello only fuels his frustration.

Iago creates misunderstanding between many people and everyone has been trapped by him, except the innocent Desdemona. Othello has been persuaded to believe that Cassio has affairs with Desdemona and a handkerchief has been provided as evidence. Othello went on to kill Desdemona in the bed and when the truth is revealed by Emilia, he does not kill Iago and saying that he would rather have Iago live the rest of his life in pain.
