Synopsis

The Oxford Book of American Essays is a collection of essays written in English language by American writers. This handful of essays written by most popular American authors concerning various topics has been collected by American literary critic William Crary Brownell, who has been a journalist and editor of publishing houses like Charles Scribner's Sons.

The author mentions in the introductory note, many contributions to English literature by authors of American origins has often been ignored and this collection is an attempt to correct that. Just like the contributions to Greek literature by Alexandrian writings cannot be ignored, so is the American writings to English literature.
