The Thirty Nine Steps is an adventure novel based during the period while Europe runs through war threat, written by John Buchan a Scottish novelist who himself served as Governor General of Canada before his writing career. He contributed the literary world with many fiction and non-fiction works including Sir Quixote of the Moors, John Burnet of Barns, A Lost Lady of Old Years, Scholar-Gipsies, The African Colony and The Law Relating to the Taxation of Foreign Income.
Through The Thirty Nine Steps the author introduced his all-action hero Richard Hannay, who has been featured in five of his novels. The novel opens with the protagonist Richard Hannay’s arrival to London to begin a new life. Franklin P. Scudder, a freelance spy meets him and claiming that he knows German anarchists called Black Stone plot to assassinate Greek Premier, Karolides and destabilize Europe.
Franklin request for shelter to save himself from the chasing of Black Stone, Hannay allows him to stay in his home. The next day Franklin was found dead, with a knife near his heart. Hannay is now in danger of being chased from Black Stone as well as the legal authorities as he cannot prove his innocence over the death of Franklin. Now Hannay has the task of not only proving his innocence, but also defend the Black Stone’s plot of killing Karolides. The rest of the story is the narration of how Hannay proves himself as an action hero.
