The Wives of the Dead is an 1832 short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, a much-beloved pioneer of early American literature. First published in the annual periodical The Token and later included in Hawthorne’s 1852 collection, The Snow-Image, and Other Twice-Told Tales, “The Wives of the Dead” concerns two sisters-in-law who become widows after their husbands die.
