Uncle Vanya is a play written by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, a Russian Dramatist remembered for his short stories and plays including The Seagull, The Cherry Orchard and Three Sisters.
Professor Serebryakov visits his rural estate accompanied by his second wife Yelena, a beautiful and much younger than him. Their rural estate is managed by his daughter Sonya and brother-in-law Uncle Vanya, both are related through his first wife. Uncle Vanya is obsessed with Yelena’s beauty and proposes her, however Yelena neither deny nor accept his proposal. Dr. Astrov, visits the estate for providing medical treatment to the professor. Sonya falls in love with him and seeking help of her step mother to convey her love.
Yelena and Dr. Astrov are alone in the home and she conveys Sonya’s love to him. However Dr. Astrov says he is not attracted towards Sonya, rather he is deeply in love with her and starts kissing Yelena passionately. While he kisses, Vanya enters the room suddenly and shocked to witness the intimacy. Next day Serebryakov announces every one that he wants to sell the estate. Vanya resists the decision and pulls a gun and shoots two bullets, but it misfires and professor is not injured. The play ends up professor and his wife returning back to their rural life, Vanya and Sonya resuming their duties as managers of the estate.
